The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa & Associated Disorders (ANAD)

ANAD was adopted at the 1985 Delta Phi Epsilon Convention as an international philanthropy project because of the effect of eating disorders on college women. Our sorority is the first international sorority to pledge regular support toward such a cause.

ANAD is a non-profit corporation that seeks to prevent and alleviate the problems of eating disorders, especially including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. They advocate for the development of healthy attitudes, bodies, and behaviors. ANAD promotes eating disorder awareness, prevention, and recovery through supporting, educating and connecting individuals, families and professionals.

Anorexia Nervosa is a mental illness in which a person has an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted perception of their weight and body shape. People with anorexia nervosa, anorexics, have a preoccupation with food, weight, dieting, and body image. They are dissatisfied with their bodies, perceive themselves to be fat regardless of their actual weight and are obsessed with becoming thin. About 50 percent of people with anorexia nervosa also develop bulimia nervosa. This is a type of eating disorder in which individuals engage in episodes of binge eating, consuming large amounts of food in a short period, and then purging the food from their bodies by self-induced vomiting or abuse of laxatives.
